Three Youth Citizenship Awards given out

Alicia Foyt of Chaparral High School was chosen as SI of Greater Las Vegas' award winner. Melanie Borom of Clark High School was SI of Creative Las Vegas' YCA recipient. Jennifer Willis of Sunset High School East was the YCA winner chosen by SI of Las Vegas Valley.

Each will receive $100 and is eligible for Soroptimist regional- and federation-level awards.

YCA is a Soroptimist of the Americas award that is given to a graduating senior from any accredited high school or its equivalent. To qualify for the award, which is judged on the merit and worth of the applicant, a student must have fulfilled the following during high school years: Service, dependability, leadership, and clear sense of purpose.

TOP YEARBOOK -- The 1995 Basic High School yearbook was among 21 yearbooks nationwide to receive the top honor in yearbook excellence, the Gold Crown Award, from Columbia University in New York. The 1995 El Lobo yearbook is titled "Between Extremes." The adviser is John Gilmour. The award was announced during the recent Columbia Scholastic Press Association awards ceremony in New York.

UPWARD BOUND -- Clark High sophomore Rochelle King was chosen from 110 eligible Upward Bound students from the UNLV Chapter to represent Nevada at the National Council of Educational Opportunities annual conference in Washington, D.C. She met with Nevada senators and congressional representatives and assisted in explaining the Upward Bound program.

ROTARY AWARDS -- Clark High students Jennifer Hale, Leslie Block and John Tang were chosen to attend the Rotary Youth Conference as recipients of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. The students were selected based on academic performance, leadership ability and a written essay on current events. At the Palm Springs, Calif., conference, students attended leadership workshops and received awards for their leadership positions at Clark.
