Readers need a good library

THE West Las Vegas Library is in a logjam. The facility is so successful, it has run out of space for more books.

Demands on the seven-year-old library are growing by leaps and bounds. The Young People's Library section notes a 60 percent increase in books checked out. Total circulation doubled in the past year and may rise another 70 percent this year. That's not bad for a 12,000-square-foot facility short of shelves, books and places to sit down.

Library patronage is particularly gratifying, since it is an indicator of literacy and interest in the surrounding world. As the West Las Vegas patronage grows, the facility should grow with it.

The building could expand within its own property boundaries, perhaps at an affordable cost. That should be done. It would be a shame to turn away people who want to improve themselves, simply because there isn't enough room for the books.
