Jewish Federation starts new elementary school

The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas is accepting applications for the newly created Jewish Community Day School of Las Vegas.

As a result of two years of planning, the school will attempt to combine "the best of a traditional Jewish education with a first-rate secular education for children (of Jewish heritage) in grades kindergarten through sixth."

"It's fun to work on something that everybody is so excited about," said Karen Galatz, president of the school's board.

She said it is uncommon to have rabbis of orthodox and reform beliefs to agree on the same platform. Half the school day will be devoted to Judaic and Bible studies, ethics and religious history.

"We are very optimistic, very determined that once the doors are open and people know the caliber of education we plan to provide that we will be successful," said Jay Epstein, a consultant to the federation.

The school will be housed temporarily at the Congregation Ner Tamid, 2761 Emerson Ave. The federation has leased 12 classrooms and anticipates 70 to 85 students the first year. Classes will begin Aug. 26.

"We would love to see the school grow up to 200. We have already had inquiries from local residents and those planning to move here," Epstein said.

The federation has hired Jerome Kutliroff to be the school's director. He is an educator with 25 years of experience, who currently runs a Jewish school in Miami, Fla.

Registration will cost $250 and tuition will be $3,950. Galatz said the school plans to offer financial support to 30 percent of students. Anyone interested in the school may call the Jewish Federation Office at 732-0556.
