Hard Rock, Harley reach settlement

Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Co. has settled its trademark dispute with the Hard Rock hotel-casino, which admitted to not getting permission to use the motorcycle logo in slot promotions.

The Hard Rock admitted to trademark-related violations and reached a confidential settlement with Harley-Davidson, according to settlement papers filed Wednesday.

Harley-Davidson accused the casino of making "many hundreds of thousands of dollars" with the use of its logo and sued for monetary damages in April.

Hard Rock's attorney, Eric Olsen, declined to comment on the details of the settlement and if cash was paid out. Harley-Davidson's attorney, Gary Goodheart, was unavailable.

The violations involved the use of Harley-Davidson's bar and shield logo on 25-cent slot machine reels, the suit said.

At least 10 such slots were used in the "Kickstart My Heart" promotion, which offered as a jackpot a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The slot promotion began in March 1995 and since has been discontinued, Olsen said.
