Magician moving from Lady Luck to Sahara

The Sahara hotel-casino is hoping that Steve Wyrick's magic is no illusion.

Commencing February 15, 2000 -- Valentine's Day -- Wyrick will perform his large-scale illusions in the new, 950-seat Sahara Theater. Sahara Marketing and Entertainment Director Yale Rowe said the magician signed an eight-year contract with the hotel. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"The new theater will have almost the same footprint as the (recently razed) old Congo Showroom," said Rowe. "The theater will have 250 balcony seats as well as 700 lower level seats." He added that final construction cost of the project is not yet known, but will be "in the multi-million dollar range."

Rowe said the theater's structural design -- including its roof -- will be built to accommodate Wyrick's large-scale brand of magic; Wyrick's best-known illusions include the disappearance of a twin-engine aircraft.

Over the past two years, Wyrick, a 29-year-old Texas native, established his Las Vegas credentials performing at the Lady Luck hotel-casino.
