An outpouring of support by the legal community made the Nevada Law Foundation Silver Ball a splendid success that will translate to services for the needy and less fortunate. A nonprofit organization begun in 1983, the foundation exists to provide funding to Nevada programs that provide legal assistance and protection to children and women in need.

Programs operating with the help of the Nevada Law Foundation include Nevada Legal Services, Temporary Assistance for Domestic Crisis (TADC), Clark County Pro Bono Project, Neighborhood Justice Center and other worthy endeavors. Chaired by Marilyn and John Moran Jr. with Sen. Harry and Landra Reid, the elegant gathering at Four Seasons was also an occasion to honor attorneys and judges in the community who have made a difference in the lives of Nevada's less-fortunate citizens.

Opening the high-spirited evening was a cocktail reception hosted by Nevada Law Foundation trustees, among them Roger Wirth with his attorney-wife, Kathryn, Cam Fehrenbach, and foundation Chairman-elect Richard Myers with his wife, Carolyne Edwards Myers. Myers is a third-year student at UNLV's Boyd School of Law.

Appointed by the Nevada Supreme Court and Nevada State Bar Board of Governors, the foundation is served by Suzan Baucum Esq. in the capacity of executive director, with statewide trustees led by Chairman Scott Freeman and members Miriam Rodriguez, Richard Elmore, Nancy Somers, Tom Traficanti, W. Randall Mainor and Dr. John Ellerton.

Mingling in the congenial crowd were Robert and Liz Glennen, John and Dottie Wanderer, Pauline and Estes "Sonny" McDoniel, Herb Tobman, Judges Donald Mosley and Nancy Oesterle, Jeff and Monica Guinn and Rich Lavell, as well as Phil and Dawn Bleuth, J.T. and Jody Moran and Nevada Supreme Court Justice Miriam Shearing. Providing a classical backdrop to the shining occasion was attorney Mace J. Yampolsky at the piano.

A delectable dinner, served at a graceful pace most conducive to seeing guests use the spacious dance floor, was enjoyed prior to the eloquent program led by Nevada's Supreme Court Chief Justice William Maupin. Honored for their service were Lillian Sondgeroth, Robert C. Maddox, Barbara Buckley, Nancy Allf, Cal J. Potter, Elizabeth Goff Gonzalez, Robert J. Kolesar, Robert H. Perry, Gloria J. Sturman, Todd L. Torvinen and the Honorable Jennifer P. Togliatti. Present for the ceremonies at the black-tie dinner were supporters District Judge Mark and Alice Denton, Steve and Vicki Quinn, Kathleen England, Dave Thomas, Denyce Tuller, Keith and Linda Galliher, Mike and Julie Foley, John Mowbray, Ryan Creel with Leslie Denton, Marie Ellerton and Judge Mark and Sandy Gibbons.

Chefs For Kids

Chefs For Kids dinner and auction, now in its 10th year, will be held at the Rio on April 28. Known for its nearly legendary treasures from our city's finest restaurants and the gifts of remarkable chefs and support staff, the evening opens with a reception where silent auction packages are explained in great, often lyrical style.

Golf for four at Rio Secco, private party packages for elegant picnics, dinners and special gatherings, wedding cakes and other sought-after offerings are the norm at this most worthy benefit. For the first time, the live auction held during dinner will include the artistry of world-class Chef John Folsen, television star of "A Taste of Louisiana" and author of numerous cookbooks. Folse and his staff will travel to Las Vegas, bringing with them all the special ingredients and cookware necessary to prepare a true New Orleans jazz brunch at the home of the lucky bidder.

Certain to attract much attention is the East Meets West package created by Executive Chef Van Atkins, formerly with Palace Court at Caesars Palace, and Chef Ming See Woo of the Mayflower Restaurant, a dinner for eight guests prepared at the bidder's home.

This year's Chefs For Kids dinner will recognize Dr. Stephen and Linda Montoya, longtime supporters of this local effort to assist children in our community. Each month a virtual army of local chefs and their support teams provide breakfast to each child attending Clark County's nine most at-risk schools. Through their efforts, children learn the value of choosing the most nutritious foods as they enjoy meals prepared by these gifted volunteers. In addition, four professional nutritionists from Nevada Cooperative Extension work with children in the classroom to further reinforce the concepts learned at each meal. Chefs For Kids created a video on good eating habits, released earlier this school year and available to all area elementary schools.

Dave Simmons, Buzz Thurber, Brenda Hitchins and Eric Rutsky are among those leading this benefit dedicated to funding the food costs for the year-round program. Las Vegas notables joining this community effort include Liz and Chuck Lenzie, Jan and Owen Nitz, Dr. Shelby Welbourn, Peg Crockett, Linda and Gary Vause, University Regent Mark Alden and Tamara and Jay Kornmayer, to name just a few. Reservations are a must, so please call 258-8011 for full details.
