Council to consider NLV casino

After months of very public and sometimes heated debate, an application for a casino on the Craig Ranch Golf Course is in the hands of the North Las Vegas City Council.

The council Wednesday will vote on whether to create a gaming enterprise district on the golf course, which would allow Station Casinos Inc. to build it latest venture on the site at Craig Road and Coleman Street.

The council must base its decision on whether the applicant -- the owners of the golf course -- have provided clear and convincing evidence that the gaming district would have a positive effect on the city and the surrounding community. The casino site must not be within 2,500 feet of any schools or churches.

The proposal for a casino on the golf course sprang up a year ago, when the owners of the golf course began negotiating with Station Casinos.

After negotiations, Station said it would give up its rights to an already approved casino parcel at Craig Road and Martin Luther King if it is allowed to build on the golf course.
