Convention center opening pushed to January 2003

A massive convention center under construction at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino will open in January 2003, the company announced Monday.

The company said last month that it would delay opening the 1.8 million-square-foot center following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that have hurt the city's tourism and convention industry.

Danielle Babilino, vice president of hotel sales at Mandalay Bay, said the delay in opening would enable the company to better market the building.

When completed, the convention center will become the second-largest meeting site in the city. It will include the largest pillar-less hotel ballroom in the country.
