Fremont Experience to host BikeFest

As many as 15,000 bikers are expected from around North America for the Las Vegas BikeFest beginning Thursday at Fremont Street Experience.

The event, which will feature more than 150 vendors of bikes, accessories, clothing, food and concerts, will open to the public at 5 p.m. Thursday and will remain open throughout the weekend, closing at 1 p.m. Sunday

St. Therese Center to honor nurses

The St. Therese Center, a not-for-profit organization that provides services to those infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, will hold its 2002 Circle of Roses Awards ceremony beginning 6 p.m. Friday in the Riviera's Grand Ballroom.

The event will acknowledge an individual or group of individuals who have made a difference in the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS.

This year's recipients of the Circle of Roses are the nurses from both the University Medical Wellness Center and from One North.

Tickets are $75 and all proceeds will benefit the St. Therese Center. For more information, call the Rev. Joseph O'Brien at 565-4224.

Rape prevention class is scheduled

A free four-hour class on rape prevention and self-defense will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center of Excellence, 100 N. Green Valley Parkway, Suite No. 330.

Women will receive tips on how to reduce their risk of victimization and learn how to defend themselves in assault situations.

The first half of the class will focus on the use of pepper spray, date rape drugs, becoming more authoritative in your stance and the way you carry yourself, and the circumstances of how sexual assaults occur.

The second half will be taught by a fifth-degree black belt and will focus on self-defense. To register or for more information, call 616-4900.

Jewish Genealogy Society to meet

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada Inc. will meet at 10 a.m Sunday at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

The program will cover letters to government agencies as well as to family members. There will be examples of failures and successes as well as an explanation of how and why these results occurred. Call 363-8230 daytime or 871-9773 after 6 p.m.
