Two vehicles hit, kill pedestrian, 60

A 60-year-old pedestrian was hit by two cars and killed while trying to cross Sahara Avenue at Commercial Center shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, Metro Police said.

The man, whose identity was not released this morning, was in the crosswalk but walking against the "do not walk" signal, police said.

The pedestrian was knocked to the ground by a 2003 Mercury Grand Prix driven by Howard Rasch, 66, police said.

The pedestrian fell in front of a pickup truck driven by Vicki Tulley, 40, who was heading west on Sahara next to the Mercury.

Driver killed in two-car crash

A 21-year-old Las Vegas man died in a car accident Saturday after he failed to yield the right of way or have his seat belt buckled, Metro Police said.

Four others were hurt in the two-vehicle crash about 1:30 p.m.

The name of the man killed was not released.

The man died after he attempted to make a left turn east of Durango Drive from Charleston Boulevard, police said.

An eastbound Lexus 300 struck the front passenger side of the Malibu. The impact ejected the Malibu's driver, who was pronounced dead after he was taken to University Medical Center.

Durango Drive section completed

Las Vegas opened a new one-mile section of Durango Drive between Interstate 215 and Oso Blanco Road on Friday, two months ahead of schedule.

The project cost $3.5 million and began in March. It included a new water line at Durango and Deer Springs, and median islands, curbs, gutters and streetlights along with storm drainage.

In a prepared statement, Ward 6 Councilman Michael Mack said the new stretch will improve access from U.S. 95 south to Interstate 215 west when it opens later this year. Another project on Durango, $3.4 million in work between Lone Mountain and Tropical Parkway is scheduled for completion at the end of the year.

Flood assistance office to open

The Small Business Administration flood assistance office will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Las Vegas West Service Center, 3001 Ronemus Drive near West Cheyenne Avenue and North Buffalo Drive, officials announced.

The office will remain open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays, until further notice, SBA Regional Administrator Bruce Thompson said in the statement.

The office offers home loans of up to $200,000 for real estate repair or replacement and up to $40,000 for property repair or replacement. Businesses may be eligible to borrow up to $1.5 million. For information from the regional office in Sacramento, call (800) 488-5323.
