Water project earns Sun a national award

The Las Vegas Sun has won a national journalism award for its in-depth, multimedia study of the water crisis facing the Las Vegas Valley.

The project, “Quenching Las Vegas’ Thirst,” won the Associated Press Managing Editors Association outstanding journalism award for online convergence. The competition was among the nation’s largest circulation newspapers.

APME called the Sun project “a cutting-edge multimedia presentation and interactive database exploring a serious water shortage.”

The project includes:

• A five-part series, with photos and graphics, by Sun reporter Emily Green, who spent nearly a year crisscrossing the West for interviews and to conduct archival research.

• A five-part video documentary that uses a special interactive three-section video/graphics player.

• A countdown clock that tells the days, hours and seconds until Las Vegas is expected to run dry.

• An interactive tool that helps readers find out how much water they use compared with the other 430,000 single-family homeowners in the city.
