Woman who died in house fire was third-grade teacher

Fatal fire

A woman found dead after a bedroom fire Tuesday night taught third grade in the Clark County School District.

Although the Clark County Coroner's Office hasn't identified the woman, the School District confirmed that Michelle Perch, a Jo Mackey Elementary School teacher, was the person found in the bedroom.

The fire in the two-story house in the 7200 block of Grand Palace Avenue near Ann Road and U.S. 95 is still under investigation, said Tim Szymanski, spokesman for the Las Vegas Fire Department.

Investigators are waiting for toxicology results, which could take as long as eight weeks, Szymanski said.

At this time the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Szymanski said. Fire investigators do not believe the fire was intentionally set or is suspicious, he said.

The fire occurred at 7:11 p.m. Tuesday and was contained in the master bedroom. The fire caused $5,000 in damage and Perch was the only resident of the house, he said.

Two black Labrador dogs were saved from the blaze.

Perch had spent 20 years teaching with the Clark County School District, the last 16 of them at Jo Mackey.

School District crisis counselors are available for students and staff of the school to deal with Michelle Perch's death.
