- Henderson metal band back together (2-10-2009)
The original members of Hemlock, a heavy metal band born 16 years ago in Henderson, will reunite tonight at the new Sinister Rock Bar.
Old fans will remember this lineup from gigs at local venues such as the Huntridge Theatre.
“It’s going to be an exciting show,” said bassist Chad Smith, the only member of the original group who still performs with the band. “I never could find it in myself to quit the band. I kept it rolling.”
The band changed personnel and broke out of the local scene 10 years ago. Hemlock has toured across the United States and in Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia. It shared the stage with groups such as Slayer, Hatebreed, Ministry, Meshuggah, Soulfly, Otep, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Snot and Arch Enemy.
Smith and the current members of Hemlock returned from a two-week tour in Japan in the fall.
“We went all over, ate a bunch of strange food,” he said. “The shows were awesome. I wasn’t sure how they would go over with the language barrier but all the kids were jumping around, rocking, headbanging. It was good times.”
Around Thanksgiving, the three original members — Chad’s brother Brian Smith (drums), Mike Johns (guitar) and Richard Burnett (guitar) — joined their old band onstage for a couple of numbers at the end of a local concert.
Lightning struck. It didn’t take much to persuade the ex-members to reenlist for the reunion.
There are five bands on the Friday the 13th bill — with Hemlock headlining. It will be sort of a grand opening for the new venue, which took over the location of the former hip-hop club SRO.
