Police standoff

A man and a woman died after a domestic dispute in North Las Vegas turned into a standoff with North Las Vegas Police officers and a SWAT team this morning.

North Las Vegas Police received a call at about 5:36 a.m. Friday from a friend of the woman, Sgt. Tim Bedwell said. The woman inside the apartment had called the friend and said she and her husband had argued and he got a gun out and was holding it to her head, police said.

Officers arrived at the Craig Ranch Villa Apartments at 390 Casa Norte Drive in about five minutes and knocked on the door. The man answered the door, but he was verbally combative, Bedwell said.

The man fired a shot out of an apartment window at officers, who heard more shots fired and called in a SWAT team for a hostage rescue, Bedwell said.

When SWAT members entered the apartment, they found both a man and a woman dead. The Clark County Coroner's Office has not released the identities of the two people and will determine a cause of death.

"I think that this just demonstrates how bad a domestic situation can go," Bedwell said. "For those in such a situation, seek help."
