McCarran traffic drops nearly 8 percent last year

McCarran International Airport saw a 7.7 percent decline in passenger traffic last year compared to 2007, according to airport numbers released today.

The airport had 44,074,941 arriving and departing passengers last year, which is down from 47,729,527 passengers the previous year.

Passenger traffic was down 14.1 percent in December 2008 compared to December 2007. The passenger count dropped from 3,683,689 in December 2007 to 3,164,393 last month.

The airport's largest carriers each saw declines in the number of passengers they served.

Southwest Airlines, which is McCarran's largest carrier, saw a 5.4 percent drop in passengers last month compared to December 2007. The airport served 2.1 percent fewer passengers in all of 2008 compared to 2007.

McCarran's second-largest carrier, US Airways, saw a 31.2 percent drop in traffic last month and a 24.2 percent decline in all of last year compared to 2007.
