Boulder City Council in brief

City moves toward solar in dry lake bed

The City Council approved amending the 2009 Land Management Plan on Tuesday to allow solar development on parts of the dry lake bed.

The council approved the measure 3-0. Councilwoman Linda Strickland and Councilman Mike Pacini were absent.

The Land Management Plan defines what uses are appropriate for vacant city-owned spaces and is designed to get neighborhood input before rezoning, sale or lease of the land. The Planning Commission last month recommended adding the solar development to the plan.

The city earlier this month told solar companies they could test the area for feasibility in building plants there. NextLight Renewable Power wants to lease 6,600 acres in the area for a solar plant.

City still seeks buyers for industrial lots

City Manager Vicki Mayes told the City Council Tuesday that the city still has not found buyers for two areas that have been approved for sale in the Land Management Plan.

She suggested the city within 60 days ask for buyers of an Industrial Court subdivision east of Yucca Street. The city in October asked for proposals, but none worked out, she said. If the city can't sell the lots, it should offer the sale through a broker, she said.

She suggested the same for the site of the old city animal shelter on San Felipe Drive, which is zoned for low-density residential. Voters in 2007 approved selling that land. The city will update the appraisal before asking for bids, Mayes said.

In addition, she said, the city is drafting a lease for 100 acres southwest of Bootleg Canyon, to Hang Time Sports, to be submitted to the City Council in April.

Strickland named to school panel

The Boulder City Council reappointed Councilwoman Linda Strickland to represent Boulder City on the Clark County Oversight Panel for School Facilities. Her term will expire Dec. 31, 2010.

The panel, which has met since 1997, makes recommendations for financing the costs of new construction, design, maintenance and repair of school facilities.
