In response to what he says are growing complaints from constituents, Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak will hold a town hall meeting tonight at Lake Las Vegas.

Sisolak, whose district includes Henderson, said he hopes the meeting will give residents of Lake Las Vegas a clear view of what is happening within their community. The commissioner said he is holding the meeting because “no one else would.”

The meeting will be from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the Casablanca Ballroom at Loews Lake Las Vegas, 101 Montelago Blvd. Representatives from all 12 homeowners associations have said they will attend, Sisolak said.

He said most residents of Lake Las Vegas have been getting their information about the community from the news media. The commissioner said he hoped the town hall meeting would spur the community’s leaders to work more directly with residents to keep them informed.

“Property values there just plummeted,” he said. “Residents out there are very concerned … they want to be told what’s going on.”

Last month, Casino Montelago at Lake Las Vegas closed, leaving 177 employees without jobs. About 350 employees will lose their jobs when the Ritz-Carlton closes May 2.

Henderson has a vested interest in the success of Lake Las Vegas. During the Henderson City Council meeting on March 23, City Manager Mark Calhoun gave a report on the status of the community, which Councilwoman Kathleen Boutin had requested during a previous meeting.

According to the report, Henderson has 76 active business license permits at Lake Las Vegas. During the 2009 fiscal year, Lake Las Vegas brought the city nearly $640,000 in room taxes, which is about one-quarter of the city's total room tax revenue.

According to Henderson City Attorney Elizabeth Macias Quillin, Lake Las Vegas owes about $25.7 million to the city of Henderson in Local Improvement District financing and assessments. The city has three such districts in the Lake Las Vegas development.

Henderson Councilwoman Gerri Schroder, whose ward includes Lake Las Vegas, said that she, the other council members and Mayor Andy Hafen plan to attend Sisolak’s town hall.

“Things, I think, are starting to shape up and look better,” Hafen said Tuesday, referring to Lake Las Vegas. “We still have a ways to go. Hopefully in the near future this will be a thing of the past.”

Schroder said she has met with residents of Lake Las Vegas and hopes that open communication will help facilitate solutions for the struggling development.

“I’m constantly, every day, living and breathing Lake Las Vegas,” she said.
