5 birds die in house fire

House Fire

Five exotic birds died in a kitchen fire Monday morning that started in a house near the intersection of West Charleston Boulevard and South Decatur Boulevard.

The fire caused $50,000 in damage and has been ruled accidental.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said the fire began shortly after midnight in a one-story, wooden-frame home at 4523 Alpine Place. He said the fire was started by food that was left cooking on the stove.

Two adults occupy the home but no one was home at the time of the fire, authorities said. Five birds died because of the smoke, but a pet dog survived, Szymanski said.
