Officer involved shooting

A man fatally shot by Metro Police on Friday after he allegedly fired two shots at officers was identified this morning as 38-year-old Robert B. Mills II.

Metro also identified the three officers involved in the shooting as Nathan Jones, 27, who has been with the department since January 2006; Jeffery Abell, 46, with the department since June 2005; and Breck Hodson, 29, with the department since January 2006. All three are assigned to the Northeast Area Command post, police said.

The officers were placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in cases of officer-involved shootings.

About 11 p.m. Friday, officers were canvassing an area after a robbery occurred when they found Mills in an SUV parked at a gas station convenience store at the intersection of Nellis and Charleston boulevards, police said.

When officers approached the vehicle, police said he pointed a firearm at the officers and fired two shots.

Officers returned fire, striking Mills, who was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit, where he was pronounced dead, Metro said. Police have said Mills was accused of robbing several places in east Las Vegas, each time firing shots at the scene.
