Girl Scouts to host ‘Thin Mint Sprint’ and ‘Shortbread Shuffle’ races

Online registration for the Thin Mint Sprint 5K and the 1-mile Shortbread Shuffle opens on Dec. 13.

The inaugural races, organized by the Girls Scouts of Southern Nevada, begin at 9 a.m. on Jan. 22, 2011, at the Girl Scout Service Center, 2941 Harris Ave.

Interested residents may register for the event online at girlscoutsnv.org starting Dec. 13. Registration fees are $25 for the 5K run and $15 for the 1-mile run prior to Jan 5. The costs increase by $5 respectively after Jan. 5, and by $10 after Jan. 20.

“The run is a perfect opportunity for the Girl Scout Healthy Living initiative, not only to benefit our girls, but the entire community,” Girl Scouts chief marketing and development officer Emily Smith said in a statement. “In one event, we are combining two of our important leadership initiatives that help foster courage, confidence and character in our girls.”

The run will culminate with the 15th annual Cookie Carnival, which kicks off the Girl Scouts cookie sales, officially starting on Jan. 29. The public is invited to join about 2,000 Girl Scouts and family members to enjoy the entertainment, cookie contests and prizes.

The Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada serves more than 10,000 girls and adult members throughout the valley. Membership is open to all girls ages 5 to 17 years old.
