Las Vegas Locomotives cornerback Isaiah Trufant was signed to the New York Jets practice squad on Wednesday.
The 5-foot-8, 170-pound defensive back was the United Football League Defensive Player of the Year in 2010, leading the Locomotives to their second consecutive title. He finished the regular season with league-record four interceptions.
“He has great instincts and is an inspiration to his teammates,” said Larry MacDuff, the Locomotives defensive and special teams coordinator. “ He is very coachable and we certainly wish him the very best. He definitely deserves the opportunity.”
Trufant recorded 13 tackles and broke up two passes in 2009. In 2010, he finished the season with 30 tackles, one sack, four pass breakups and four interceptions.
He is one of seven players from the five-team UFL to sign with a NFL team since the UFL season ended late last month.
