After two years of serving the Henderson area, the Brown Hand Center is expanding. The practice premiered the St. Michael’s Center for Special Surgery on Thursday.
The surgery center features state-of-the-art equipment to perform Brown’s signature procedures for carpal tunnel syndrome, said Dr. Chris Khorsandi, one of two lead surgeons at the practice.
The center -- following the work of Dr. Michael Brown, who developed his methods about 20 years ago and spread them across the U.S. -- hopes to continue adding services as it becomes more involved in the community, Khorsandi said.
“It’s nice to see some growth in an area that’s been hit hard by the economy,” he said. “Las Vegas is becoming an important city, a place for families.”
Opening the surgery center “brings it all together,” Khorsandi said. Patients can come to the office, have their lab work done and have a surgery performed at the same place with the same people every time.
The goal of Brown’s carpal tunnel surgery is to fix the problem with as little interference to daily life and work as possible, Khorsandi said, because people are often nervous about having an operation on their hands.
Medically speaking, it involves a smaller, less obtrusive incision with special blades designed by Brown, Khorsandi added.
“It’s been proven in the results,” he said. “The more patients we take care of, the more they see this is a good thing … They’ve heard the horror stories. Word of mouth has been reassuring. We’re doing things the right way.”
The center deals with all problems related to the “upper extremities,” Khorsandi said, except for shoulders, which are a specialized field.
