Child of Metro Police officer shoots self in abdomen

Approximate area of shooting

The son of a Metro Police officer was critically injured in Moapa this past weekend after he accidentally shot himself with a handgun, authorities said.

Metro Police responded at 10:53 p.m. Saturday to the 600 block of Lillian Condie Road after a report that a child had been struck by gunfire.

According to police, the child was put to bed in his parents' bedroom. The boy, whose age wasn't being released, then got out of bed and found a handgun in a nightstand, police said. He was struck in the arm and abdomen when the handgun discharged.

The boy was brought to University Medical Center, where he is in critical condition, police said Monday. Metro's Abuse and Neglect Detail is investigating the shooting.

According to police, Metro’s Internal Affairs Division will review the case after it is reviewed by the Clark County District Attorney’s Office to determine if any of the department’s policies were violated.
