Nevada businesses pledge support for legislation on climate change

A number of Nevada businesses have pledged their support of climate change legislation, Environment Nevada announced today.

The environmental organization has gathered dozens of signatures from business owners and representatives across the state that support some form of climate change legislation.

Many of these businesses signed a letter supporting specific legislative measures like carbon markets and a renewable portfolio standard.

The announcement comes as environmental groups and renewable energy advocates across the country continue to urge Congress to tackle the climate change legislation it has put off for months.

Nine out of 10 businesses surveyed by Environment Nevada supported some form of climate legislation, said organization spokesman Pete Dronkers.

"There has been so much overwhelming support for this legislation," Dronkers said in teleconference today. "From the biggest corporation like Harrah's to the smallest dry cleaning company. Most people we we've talked to want this legislation, they want green jobs and clean air and economic diversification."

The list of supporters includes prominent Las Vegas businesses like Harrah's Entertainment, N9NE properties, Capriotti's and Republic Services, which announced today plans to convert its residential garbage truck fleet to compressed natural gas, a move Republic Vice President Bob Coyle said would be the equivalent of taking 80,000 cars off Las Vegas' streets.

"We're a big supporter of the (climate change) bill and anything that continues to enhance quality of life and reduces emissions," Coyle said. "This helps create cleaner communities and cleaner air."

Several Southern Nevada businesses signed letters of support for strong climate change legislation that includes a national greenhouse gas reduction target of 20 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, a national renewable electricity standard of 25 percent by 2025, the creation of carbon markets, an energy efficiency resource standard (EERS) that would require utilities to become 10 percent more efficient by 2020 and a framework to use money from carbon credits to fund clean public transit projects and other programs to ease the transition to clean energy.

Signatories included: Harrah's Entertainment, Republic Services of Southern Nevada, JMA Architecture, Evergreen Recycling, SH Architecture, Plaster Development Company, Signature Custom Homes, Phoneramic, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Energy Works Consulting, N9NE Group properties, Everything Electric, Sustainable Energy Services, American Solar Electric, Home Energy Connection, RA Energie, GreenDream Enterprises, Majestic Cabinets, Saving Energy Solar, Meadows Renewable Energy, and DeLee and Associates.
