Dear In Business Las Vegas readers,

While our optimism is growing for 2010, we’re also realistic about upcoming challenges. I’d like to share with you some statistics from the managing director of the Economic Cycle Research Institute, Lakshman Achuthan.

The United States’ economy is 5 percent smaller than it was before the recession began. The U.S. had a 20 percent shift in the size of the economy in less than two years. We’ve lost 8 million jobs and will likely have uncomfortably high unemployment rates for the next decade.

But there’s good news. The U.S. economy also grew by 4 percent in the second half of 2009. I suspect we’ll start seeing signs of recovery in 2011. The key now is to lay the groundwork for opportunities to come.

That’s what we’ve done at Gatski Commercial Real Estate Services. Thus far this year we’ve saved some of our clients at least $500,000 in property taxes by obtaining assessed valuation reductions through the Clark County Board of Equalization. Through this process we were successful in having their value re-established more in line with the current economy.

It’s our way of changing with the times. That’s something at which the city of Las Vegas excels, particularly downtown Las Vegas, which is featured in this edition. Take The Smith Center for Performing Arts. It’s a true catalyst for future development, and we commend the investors and Newland Communities for their long-range thinking.

I’ve watched with great interest the changes in Las Vegas over the years, dating back to when I viewed the city as a child from my grandparents’ house at Fourth and Carson. Las Vegas was always such an accessible place, even for a young man just out of college, and I have fond memories of sharing a cup of coffee with some of the city’s icons – Ralph Lamb, Harley Harmon and Roger Foley. The area has seen countless changes since then, and the Smith Center is an encouraging example of the direction the area is heading.

I, for one, am encouraged and optimistic.

Best personal regards,

Rob Moore
