Arno Marsh will be the guest of honor at his own show this Sunday. The 82-year-old tenor saxophonist is the subject of “ARNO – The Life and Times of Arno Marsh” at E-String in Henderson.

The show, presented by Phil Esser and the Bruce Harper Band, is set for 3 p.m. Tickets are $25.

The story tracks Marsh’s early years in Grand Rapids, Mich., to his years playing with Woody Herman on the road, and his move in 1960 to Las Vegas, where he joined Charlie Ventura’s band at the Thunderbird Lounge.

Marsh, who will perform with a 17-piece orchestra and numerous special guests on Sunday, has played alongside jazz legends such as Lionel Hampton and Stan Kenton.

Esser, the show’s producer and organizer, said he directs Marsh in their choir at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Boulder City.

He’s a “semi-retired performer-producer from Detroit” himself, Esser said, and after directing a couple of shows to honor other below-the-radar musicians from the valley, he decided to pay Marsh a tribute.

“We’re blessed with all these guys with nothing to do,” Esser said. “They’re still at the top of their game.”

Some of the show’s highlights will include glimpses at Marsh’s time backing up the Rat Pack at the Las Vegas Sands and an episode when he meets Marilyn Monroe days before her death.

And, of course: the music. “It takes your breath away,” Esser said of Marsh’s live performance.
