Bright blue slides and swings, along with a shade structure for the summer months, made their debut at Sunridge Park in Henderson on Monday.

The new facilities opened after about a month of construction, said Kim Becker, spokeswoman for the city's department of parks and recreation. The park, 1010 Sandy Ridge Ave., is in a heavily residential area where many families with small children live, she said, so the city decided to add playground equipment.

"We were able to fill a need there," Becker said.

Henderson is in the process of installing shade structures in all of its parks. Providing shade was not as common in the 1990s, when many of the parks were built, Becker said, so the city has been adding two or three per year out of a special fund for recreational projects.

The Sunridge project cost about $60,000, she said.
