All eyes on Chey-town vs. Palo Verde

Palo Verde hosts Cheyenne in a Thursday night game between two traditional Northwest powers. The Panthers have looked nearly invincible while starting the season 5-0, but could the Desert Shields give them a scare in this rivalry game?

Desert Pines has won two in a row.

The Jagaurs raced past the Valley Vikings Friday night with their usual formula — steady doses of running backs Leon Hayes and Derrick Shaw.

“We led the whole time,” Desert Pines coach Paul Bennet said. “We made some mistakes and let them believe in the second half, but it was one of those situations where we held on to pick up a win.”

Valley’s only score came after Desert Pines opened the second half by throwing an interception. Other than that slip-up, the Jaguars defense was impenetrable all night.

Bennet said his defensive front dominated the line of scrimmage when Valley had the ball. Francisco Cisneros and Tala Atimalala led the defensive charge with numerous tackles.

“This was a must-win game,” Bennett said. “We look at every game as a must-win game. We feel we can do that from here on out."

The victory improved Desert Pines to 2-3, while Valley dropped to 0-6.
