Injury forces UFC heavyweight off Jan. 1 card

Fight Coverage

Former UFC heavyweight title contender Shane Carwin has pulled out of the UFC 125 co-main event fight against Roy Nelson due to a back injury.

Carwin announced the news on his website, shane-carwin.com

On the website, Carwin (12-1) wrote he had an MRI performed on the area Monday. According to reports Wednesday by MMAfighting.com, he is expected to undergo surgery and his timetable for return is unknown.

“This is a hard decision but the right one,” wrote Carwin, on pulling out of the Jan. 1 card. “I hope Team Carwin can stand by me through this period of my career. No one wants to get me back to winning more than me.”

Carwin last fought at UFC 116 on July 3, where he suffered a second-round submission loss to former champion Brock Lesnar in a title fight. Prior to the loss, Carwin had posted 12 consecutive first-round stoppage wins.
