Gov. Jim Gibbons is in stable condition after doctors performed surgery to repair his pelvis, which was broken in "several places," according to his office.

Gibbons suffered the injury Tuesday afternoon when he was thrown from a horse at a private Northern Nevada ranch.

Gibbons, 65, had the surgery at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, where he is recovering and expected to be through at least Friday. The surgery lasted about two hours.

His office, in a statement, said "the doctor who performed the surgery says the operation went very well and the governor’s prognosis is excellent." The doctor also said the governor's injuries were "very serious but very fixable."

The governor's office said the doctor expects Gibbons to make a full recovery.

Gibbons will be able to continue to perform his duties as governor, the office said, though his mobility will be limited.

Previously the governor's office said he had broken his hip.
