Group to discuss possible changes to concealed carry permits

The Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association is considering changes to how concealed carry weapon permits are administered.

The permits were a major topic of testimony in the coroner’s inquest into the police shooting of Erik Scott, who had a permit to carry a number of weapons, including one of the two guns he had when he was shot by police outside a Summerlin Costco July 10. A jury ruled Tuesday that shooting was justified.

On Wednesday, Sheriff Doug Gillespie said any changes to the CCW permits would have to be considered at the state level.

Shortly after Gillespie’s remarks, the Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association announced a permit holders’ forum for the following day to allow public input into any such changes.

The moderating panel of the forum will be Douglas County Undersheriff Paul Howell, Julie Butler from the Nevada Department of Public Safety and Frank Adams, the executive director of the association.

The forum will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Nevada Legislature Building in Carson City. It will also be teleconferenced to the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas and to Great Basin College in Elko.

The meeting will be broadcast on the Legislature’s website, www.leg.state.nv.us. Public comments and questions can be submitted before the event to [email protected].
