No fooling — temperatures climbing to low 90s in Las Vegas

Forecasters saying warm weather could set high temperature record today

Temperatures will be running close to 20 degrees above normal today in the Las Vegas Valley — and that's no April Fool's Day joke, says the National Weather Service.

Afternoon highs will climb into the low 90s in the valley, possibly tying or setting a new record high for the first day of April, the weather service said.

A high pressure system over the area is basking the area in the warm temperatures today. But a strong low pressure system will bring strong winds this weekend along with a chance of precipitation and much cooler temperatures on Sunday, forecasters said.

At 5:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 62 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 50 degrees. The record low was 35 degrees, set in 1948.

Around the valley just before 6 a.m., temperatures were 58 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 58 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 57 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 69 degrees by 9 a.m., to 82 degrees by noon and reach a high of 94 degrees by 4 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 74 degrees and the record high was 92 degrees, set in 1966.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 92 degrees by 6 p.m., to 83 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 76 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Saturday's morning low will be 69 degrees and Saturday's high will climb to 93 degrees, they said.
