LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

It’s going to take a solid candidate to trump Obama

Looking ahead to the 2012 presidential race, Barack Obama is overwhelmingly the best liberal candidate, as evidenced by his winning record of the past few years — and he will be difficult to beat.

The president passed the new health care law over tremendous objections from the public; likewise the financial regulation legislation. He has advanced public employment with the stimulus bill and distributed wealth with Cash for Clunkers, cash for homebuyers and even cash for appliances.

The bipartisan Christmas gifts of tax relief for the rich and poor alike will win votes from all sides. Even the Libyan adventure will not likely adversely affect Obama’s re-election prospects.

In the 2008 campaign there was really not much to choose from between the policies of John McCain and Barack Obama. What our democracy needs in 2012 is a clear choice between the president and the challenger.

The current GOP hopefuls are shopworn politicians such as Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney, or nationally unknown politicians such as Haley Barbour, Gary Johnson or Tim Pawlenty.

I suggest we give the free market a chance to work by providing a real choice.

Consider Donald Trump. Could there be a more capitalist outsider? Trump is well known and his thoughts are contained in books written over the years.

We all know of his successes and failures, his wives and families.

The Donald wants to be president, he’s tanned and rested and I’d like to see him in the game.
