A fire started at a Las Vegas home Sunday evening in the same area where workers had been using a torch to repair a damaged patio cover, investigators said.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded at 7:24 p.m. to the fire in the 6100 block of Shawnee Avenue, near Alta Drive and Jones Boulevard, after dispatchers received several reports about the blaze from neighbors.

Fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said two people who live at the home were having work done to repair damage to their patio cover caused by recent high winds. The home's occupants and neighbors told investigators a torch was used by the workers who had been on the roof all day.

When the work was completed, the two residents of the home went out to dinner Sunday night as workers were leaving. Neighbors reported seeing the fire a short time later in the same areas where the workers had been making repairs.

One firefighter was injured after being struck by a tool while battling the fire. The firefighter was taken to University Medical Center to be examined.

The fire caused about $80,000 in damage. Fire investigators planned to speak to the workers making the patio cover repairs on Monday.

Officials said two small dogs that were rescued by firefighters possibly suffered smoke inhalation, but both appeared to be fine.
