Spaces still available in NLV Police civilian training program

The North Las Vegas Police Department is seeking 20 volunteers to participate in an upcoming training session for its Volunteers in Police Services program.

The deadline to apply is Thursday, by 5 p.m.

The VIPS program trains civilian volunteers to support the police functions of the police department. A typical four-hour shift for a VIPS graduate includes patrolling the community for quality of life issues, recognizing safety hazards, conducting business and park safety checks and performing traffic control.

The volunteers, who wear department-issued polo shirts and drive marked “Civilian Patrol” vehicles, are trained to recognize and report suspicious activities without getting directly involved.

Residents interested in applying for the VIPS program may contact the North Las Vegas Police Department by calling 702- 633-2199 or apply online at www.cityofnorthlasvegas.com/policedepartment.

Applicants should be at least 21 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, reside within the city of North Las Vegas and be able to pass a thorough background check.
