Las Vegas Fire and Rescue firefighters extinguished a brush fire in a vacant lot in the northeast valley early this morning that started in a homeless camp, officials said.

The fire broke out about 6 a.m. on a desert lot in the 500 block of North Lamb Boulevard near Bonanza Road, Metro Police Lt. James Weiskopf said.

Fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said the fire burned about two acres of the 10-acre area.

The fire appears to have started in a homeless camp near a cluster of trees in the empty lot, Szymanski said. Investigators found evidence of a camp and several discarded cigarettes in the area where the fire originated.

The fire occurred near an apartment complex, the Carpenters Union building and William K. Moore Elementary School, but no buildings were damaged and no injuries were reported from the fire, Szymanski said.
