Bill requiring parental consent before tanning advances

Sun Coverage

CARSON CITY – The owner of a tanning business would be required to have the written consent of parents before allowing anyone under 18 years old to use tanning equipment under a bill approved Monday by the Senate.

And a person qualified to operate the equipment would have to be present at all times when the youth is using sunlamps, tanning booth, tanning beds and other devices that emit ultraviolet radiation.

Senate Bill 291 would allow the parents to file suit if the tanning business operator didn't get written consent.

The owner could be hit with a $2,000 judgment, plus court and attorney fees, for the first offense. The second offense would carry a $4,000 judgment.

The vote on the bill, which now goes to the Assembly, was 13-8 with Republicans Joe Hardy of Boulder City and Dean Rhoads of Elko joining 11 Democrats.
