Hipstamatic was just another iPhone app that took “vintage-looking” pictures until New York Times photographer Damon Winters won a professional photography award using the popular app.

On Friday, 99 photographs taken with the iPhone using the Hipstamatic app will be on display at Nevada State College.

The photography exhibit, “Vegas from the Hip,” will feature images from 41 “iPhoneographers.” It will run through May 31.

The concept for the exhibit came from the historic connection between the Hipstamatic app and the Hipstamatic camera of the 1980s, which took retro-looking photographs with a grainy look, random light streaks and wacky colors.

The exhibit, funded with a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, seeks to show attendees a unique and colorful perspective of Las Vegas, according to exhibit organizer Gregory Robinson, an assistant English professor at the college.

Residents are invited to the opening on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
