Weekend to bring gusty winds, cooler temperatures to Las Vegas

Although today will see normal temperatures for this time of year, strong winds are expected throughout the weekend, accompanied by below-average temperatures on Saturday.

A wind advisory will be in effect for the Lake Mead National Recreation Area on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., when north winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Wind speeds will increase Saturday morning, peak in the afternoon and decrease in the evening, forecasters said.

Dangerous boating conditions are possible on the lake and winds will make open waters rough and hazardous, which could result in high waves. The weather service advised boaters to avoid open waters and stay close to the shore or protected areas.

Today will be sunny in Las Vegas with a high near 77 and north-northwest winds between 14 and 16 mph with gusts as high as 23 mph. Saturday’s forecast calls for a high near 68 degrees -- 14 degrees below normal, according to weather service records.

Wind speeds will drop Saturday night to between 9 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. A low around 46 degrees is expected.

Sunday will be sunny with a high near 74 degrees. Winds are expected to pick up again between 10 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Sunday night will be clear, with a low around 58 degrees, the weather service said.
