Public safety:

Camping stove blamed for kitchen fire east of downtown

A kitchen fire caused smoke damage at a home east of downtown Las Vegas on Saturday morning. A family of six had left the home shortly before the fire started and no one was injured, authorities said.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said firefighters responded at 7:08 a.m. after receiving reports that smoke was coming from a house at 2220 Hoyt Ave., which is near the intersection of Eastern and St. Louis avenues. Firefighters arrived to find thick, black smoke inside the one-story house.

Szymanski said the fire was smoldering in the kitchen and firefighters were able to extinguish it in less than a minute.

The fire started on the kitchen stove, which had a two-burner camping stove on top of it that was connected to a five-gallon propane gas tank. Investigators said something was burning on the camping stove, which caught the ceiling on fire and extended to the roof.

Szymanski said it's not clear why the family was using a camping stove instead of the main stove. They American Red Cross was assisting the family. Damage was estimated at $25,000.

This was the second kitchen fire within 30 minutes east of downtown -- the first of which occurred on Stewart Avenue in an apartment, where a family escaped unharmed.
