LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

We need leaders now, not crusaders

All politicians attack their opponents during elections then, when elected, begin the process of governing all of the people. In monitoring the events in Wisconsin it has become clear that instead of governing, many Republicans use their office to, in effect, rule and extend their attack to constituents who didn’t vote for them.

It’s obvious why Republicans are always signing no-tax pledges. If you promise to do nothing to increase revenue then your only option is to cut expenses in times of crisis. You can then balance your budget by going after those who don’t normally vote for you, which, apparently, is perceived by these Republicans as an added bonus to “governing.” Teachers and most public employees are generally union members who neither vote for nor contribute to Republicans. It is these people who fairly negotiated their salaries and benefits that are somehow being portrayed as the source of the state’s economic crisis and who will now assume the entire burden of the state budget deficit.

In reality, after cutting expenses as much as possible, a parent would have to get another job to increase revenue to support a family. In Republican-governing ideology, they starve their “stepchildren” who didn’t vote for them so they can continue to buy toys for their “natural children” who did.

If you want an elected official who will govern in the interests of all the people, it doesn’t appear you will find that in too many Republicans. In times like these, every state needs a leader, not an ideological crusader. We need someone who will work collectively for all the people and the betterment of the entire state while not seeing it as an opportunity to persecute anyone. I, for one, miss Gov. Kenny Guinn.
