Las Vegas Sun

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

An arena should not be high on Vegas’ priority list

Thursday’s Las Vegas Sun had two interesting articles on the front page. Both stories appearing on the same day say a whole lot about the thinking (or lack thereof) in these financially troubled times.

One article discussed Caesars Entertainment’s plan to join with unions to attempt to place a measure on the ballot that would ask voters to approve a sales tax increase for the purpose of constructing an 18,000-seat arena in Las Vegas.

The other article discussed the announcement by the president of UNLV that about 350 jobs would be cut (fortunately, 110 of those are currently vacant) and 33 degree programs would be eliminated if Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposed budget passes the Legislature.

What is going on in Las Vegas? Have people lost their minds?

Nobody is proposing a sales tax increase to preserve higher education.

Oh, no, let’s cut the heck out of higher education.

Meanwhile, let’s raise taxes for a really important purpose — to build an arena for a nonexistent basketball or hockey franchise. A franchise that, if it comes here, will only last a few years and then likely move, leaving the taxpayers with the bill and an empty arena.

All I can do is shake my head in amazement.
