George Harris’ new TV ad pushes back on his ‘over the top’ reputation

Businessman and restaurateur George Harris will begin airing a new television commercial Friday, the third in his campaign for Las Vegas mayor.

Harris uses humor in the spot to try to bump himself up in the polls. Voter surveys have shown him trailing in sixth or seventh place.

Early voting begins Saturday, and primary day is April 5. If no candidate receives a majority of votes (which is likely), only the candidates who receive the two highest vote tallies will move forward to the general election.

Harris' commercial is titled "Over the Top," a fitting name since Harris himself has often been described that way.

It begins like a Hollywood blockbuster movie.

"In a city racked with unemployment, devastated by foreclosures and fiscally mismanaged by government bureaucrats, one man stands fighting for Las Vegas," a voice says as words flash across a black screen.

Then the camera cuts to a scene of Harris and an aide. The aide holds a doll with a waving Superman cape behind it.

"I think it's a bit over the top," Harris says flatly.

Instead, Harris suggests a different approach. He simply looks into the camera and promises to balance the city's budget and suspend business license fees for a year.
