House fire displaces 8 in northeast valley

A bedroom fire this morning in a two-story home in the northeast valley displaced eight people, fire officials said.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue crews responded to the fire at 10:45 a.m. in the 4100 block of Arcola Avenue, near Owens Avenue.

Fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said a mother and five children were home when the blaze started. A child ran downstairs and told the mother that a bedroom was on fire, Szymanski said.

The mother and children escaped safely, but one person was treated for minor smoke inhalation, Szymanski said.

Fire investigators ruled the blaze, which caused about $75,000 in damage, accidental in nature. Officials haven't determined the cause of the fire, but they believe it started near a bed, Szymanski said.

The Red Cross was assisting the two adults and six children displaced by the fire.
