Metro Police are investigating an accident that killed a 25-year-old Las Vegas man near Nellis Boulevard and Stanley Avenue this morning in the northeast valley.

Police said the accident, which involved a vehicle striking a pole, happened about 6:50 a.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates a Honda Civic was traveling south on Nellis Boulevard in the left lane when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and went off the road to the west, striking a pole with the passenger side of the car, officials said.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver, 22-year-old Francisco Lopez-Zepada, was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with serious injuries.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will identify the victim pending notification of his family.

The investigation remains ongoing. This marks the 16th fatal traffic accident in Metro's jurisdiction so far this year.
