LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Country needs to get its act together before it’s too late

Like many concerned Americans, I am worried about the future of our country and its citizens:

No. 1: Since we are making so many cuts to education, we will soon have to declare intelligent people an endangered species. Instead of worrying about toads and butterflies, we need to focus on our young people, for they are our future. (Maybe the big sports teams and players should consider where they would be without the college experience and support education with their millions of dollars.)

No. 2: Our financial situation is disastrous in a great degree because of universal money mismanagement. We had jobs and a surplus of funds when the Clinton administration ended. Then came the Bush administration. Historically, no country has gone to war without initiating a draft and raising — not cutting — taxes. It is only common sense to understand that it takes money, not just good intentions, to run a country whether in peace or war. Please raise taxes wherever it makes sense.

No. 3: We cannot continue to try to be superheroes and get involved in other countries’ problems — unless we are directly affected. We need to focus on protecting and keeping the United States strong. That includes keeping and creating jobs here.

No. 4: “Money is power,” but it certainly has created some unsavory people and practices that seem to predominate our culture. I wonder if the superrich really want a society without a middle class? If so, for shame.

I know that none of these subjects is new or unique, but I think we need to keep them constantly in our thoughts and actions. Help!
