Campus gun bill passes Senate committee

Sun Coverage

A fight over concealed weapons on Nevada college campuses is about to hit the Senate floor.

SB231 cleared the Senate Committee on Government Affairs on Friday with a 4-to-1 vote. If made into law, people who are licensed to carry concealed weapons would be able to bring them onto Nevada colleges and universities.

Concealed weapons are currently allowed at universities and colleges with the campus president's approval.

Opponents say statistics show crime is down, and the risks that come with an armed student population are too great.

Las Vegas Sen. Michael Schneider says the bill would be a scarlet letter on the state's colleges and says he'll fight it on the floor.
