LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Education is not an area we can afford to sacrifice

I was in grade school during the Great Depression. We were 25 to 30 kids in a classroom, had gym classes, music classes and a full range of sports activities, etc. No one ever considered eliminating classes for lack of money at that time.

So why is Gov. Brian Sandoval so determined to balance his budget on the backs of our schoolchildren and teachers? I am wondering why any college student in his right mind would seek a teaching degree after spending four years obtaining a college degree, only to find out he has no job after a few years of employment.

We have teachers we hired from out of state, and even paid for a part of their mortgage, to come here and teach — and now these teachers, as well as others, may find themselves with no jobs. Because of Sandoval’s proposed budget, there are about 2,500 teachers and staff who may lose their jobs.

Sandoval treats our students and teachers like dirt. He doesn’t care that class sizes will double, putting a lot more stress on teachers. What about the parents who have sacrificed to keep their kids in college only to find out that their kid’s classes have been eliminated? How and where is a student in his junior year going to complete his education?

This governor doesn’t seem to care who he steps on just to balance his budget. Lottery anyone?
