CARSON CITY – Taxable sales in Clark County, a major indicator of the economy, grew by 6 percent in January, the biggest gain in at least two years.

Sales at bars and restaurants, as well as auto sales spurred the increase in Clark County.

The Nevada Department of Taxation reported today that taxable sales statewide rose 6.6 percent in January with 14 of 17 counties posting increases.

Clark County businesses reported $2.2 billion in taxable sales during the month. Food services and drinking places registered a 7.2 percent gain. Sales of cars and auto parts jumped 8.4 percent.

Those two accounted for $690 million of the $2.2 billion taxable sales total. This was the ninth consecutive month for higher bar and restaurant sales and the fifth consecutive month for auto sales.

The department reported clothing sales jumped 13 percent, while the accommodations sector rose 20 percent in January compared to the same month of 2010.

But general merchandise business in Clark County fell by 3.9 percent; sales of building materials were off 1.6 percent and furniture sales declined by 0.2 percent, the first drop in this category since February 2010.

Washoe County’s taxable sales inched up 0.3 percent and Carson City’s business jumped 9.7 percent.

The only counties to report a drop in sales were Churchill, off 5.5 percent; Douglas, down 3.2 percent; and Lyon, off 22 percent.

The department said collections from the sales and use tax for the first seven months of this fiscal year are $12.4 million higher, or 2.7 percent, than forecast by the Economic Forum last year.

Collections from the cigarette tax are off 0.53 percent for the first seven months of this year; liquor tax receipts are up 0.98 percent and collections from the live entertainment tax are 2 percent below the projections of the Economic Forum.
