Nevada Wonk

Businessman Victor Chaltiel raised and spent more than $1 million in Las Vegas mayoral race

Businessman Victor Chaltiel raised a staggering amount of campaign cash in his bid to become Las Vegas' next mayor, but the bulk of the money came from his own bank account.

Chaltiel transferred $1.36 million of his own money into his campaign, accounting for the vast majority of the $1.44 he raised.

He took in only 78 donations -- far fewer than other leading candidates -- but received significant support from billionaire gaming mogul Sheldon Adelson. Chaltiel is chairman of the board of the Adelson Educational Campus.

Adelson and his daughter each contributed the maximum $10,000 to Chaltiel. Several Sands employees gave as well.

The venture capitalist was a virtual unknown when he announced his candidacy two months ago, but he has since increased his name recognition significantly.

Near-constant television commercials helped, but came at a price. Chaltiel has spent almost $800,000 on advertising so far.
